“Having finished my studies in London and Saarbrücken I returned to my native Freiburg in 1994 to work as a free-lance interpreter and translator. For me, the best thing about my job is the alternation between interpreting and translating and the variety of new and interesting subjects I encounter. I certainly never get bored.“

“Foreign languages have always fascinated me, and during my time spent as an au pair in Paris I learned how much fun it can be using your own linguistic skills to really get to know another culture. It made me certain that I wanted to have daily contact with languages and people from other countries in the future.
Following my studies in Germany and France I worked as a specialist translator in France and as a project manager in Germany. I find translating texts from specialist fields extremely motivating and am now enjoying the interesting and varied work at Peschel Communications.”

  • MA in Applied Translation Studies from the University of East Anglia
  • BA (hons) in French, German and Linguistics from the University of York
  • Time spent studying and working in Germany, Switzerland and France

“My fascination for languages was borne out of a combination of school exchanges, study and travel. I read French, German and Linguistics at the University of York, during which time I spent semesters in Geneva and Braunschweig. Following subsequent periods of employment in England and Paris, I returned to academia and gained an MA in Applied Translation Studies from the University of East Anglia in Norwich.
One of the best aspects of the translation profession is the flexibility it offers in moving around the world, and I feel very privileged to have been able to live in such a beautiful place as Freiburg. Having now returned to my home country, I am delighted to be able to continue working in such a close-knit team and thrilled to be heading up our office in Oxford.”

“I love being where people from different countries and cultures come together. It’s a passion that started with school exchange and continued all through my time as a student. Today my job allows me to keep in touch with other languages and cultures. I like spending my holidays abroad and in my spare time I read books and watch films in English, French, Italian and Spanish. When I translate I am not happy until I feel that I have found the perfect formulation. I developed this love of using language during both my work as a translator and as a journalist.”

“Growing up in a quadrilingual family gave me a feel for translating and interpreting from an early age. Throughout school, university, and beyond, languages have remained deep and abiding interest – it seems natural then that I should enjoy translating as much as I do. During my studies I felt it was vital to learn more about the countries where my chosen languages are spoken and the people who speak them. Time spent living in both the USA and Spain provided me with this opportunity. The team at Peschel Communications have welcomed me with astonishing warmth and friendliness. I am benefiting hugely from the experience of my colleagues and very much enjoy working as part of a well-established team.”

Katherina Polig

„From neurolinguistics to stylistics there is hardly anything about language that does not interest me. That is why working as a translator and interpreter is the best profession I could imagine. It is an incredibly varied job, and allows me to continuously develop both my technical and language skills. After living in Padova, the UK and Brussels for several years, I have now returned to a German-speaking area and am very much looking forward to an exciting time in Freiburg. One of the reasons why I enjoy working at Peschel Communications is that it allows me to actively use my different languages on a daily basis. Also, it is very satisfying to work as part of a dedicated team that is committed to ensuring that every translation turns out well.“

Susanne Sillasen

  • Translator, proof-reader, quality assurance
  • Degree in translating for English and French
  • Studied at the University of the Saarland, Leipzig University and Université Blaise Pascal (Clermont-Ferrand)
  • Extensive stays in the USA

“I knew I wanted to work with languages and people as early as High School. Later, my passion for travelling and the English language led me to spend time in the Southwest of the United States where I met my husband and was able to expand my practical knowledge of the English language. What excites me about the translation profession is that there are always new things to learn and new subjects to understand. A translator must continually train to keep his or her skills up to date and to comprehend often complicated texts. I feel very fortunate to be able to apply and expand my skills here with the highly motivated and competent team of Peschel Communications. I have been working part time since 2007 and am currently working towards a Master's degree in Psychology at the University of Freiburg.”
